Human with Feline Head. Circa 30,000 – 28,000 BCE. Some researchers believe that the animal-headed humans were either sorcerers or magicians wearing animal masks. I chose this sculpture because the idea of sorcerers speaks very firmly to the idea that early man could interact with the divine by representing, or becoming, what we believed to be sacred. Pharaoh Zoser’s Step Pyramid. Circa 2675-2625 BCE. I picked this pyramid from Egypt because of the idea behind it—the idea being that a Pharaoh was considered a direct link to the gods. What better way to let the masses know how wealthy and divine a Pharaoh was than by building a monolith such as this?
