Over the past decade, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has worked to foster one of the highest internally rated diversification programs of any fortune 500 company in the world. The Office of Diversity was created in 2003 in order to integrate a more diverse and inclusionary atmosphere at Wal-Mart stores across the globe. In 2004, several diversity programs were given the green light as Wal-Mart began to create incentives for the hire of minorities, disabled and military veteran populations. In 2010, an added focus on the inclusionary aspect of Wal-Mart’s corporate divisions was initiated, as many and more of the aforementioned minority populations were given opportunities to be promoted into executive roles for the company. In 2013, many of the diversification practices that were being put into place for Wal-Mart’s corporate divisions were extended to regular store employees and management. In relation to other Fortune 500 companies, Wal-Mart employs a nearly 12% increase in the levels of women employees, with more than 50% of their total workforce comprised of women. Internationally, Wal-Mart routinely employs higher than average percentages of women and minorities in relation to the respective country or region’s census data on each workforce. Over the next five years, Wal-Mart projects hiring more than 100,000 United States Military veterans and they have also implemented student programs for women and minorities who wish to obtain degrees while working for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. As of the end of the fiscal year 2013, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. serves customers under 69 different banners in 27 different countries and employs 2.2 million individuals worldwide.
