In January, I toured the Galapagos Islands (immortalized through the works of Charles Darwin) with my family on the Treasure of the Galapagos. The small size of the boat was a surprise, but because I was traveling with my parents, I had no prior knowledge of what to expect or what other boating options were available. Though the size was initially a shock, it ended up being cozy and inviting. The Treasure of the Galapagos features 10 rooms, which housed 25 passengers and 12 crew members. The dining room had four tables that were arranged next to a comfortable lounge area. Traditional Ecuadorian meals were served, which were delicious. I especially enjoyed the soups and appreciated the buffet-style serving. There were fresh juices and snacks served after returning from excursions, however, drinks or snacks that had to be ordered at the bar were expensive.

The crew of the Treasure of the Galapagos was consistently friendly and helpful. They were polite, always smiling and working hard to communicate, though they had limited English language skills. The crew was also incredibly hard-working, always cleaning the deck, washing windows, and ensuring that the rooms were clean and beds made upon return from any outings.

Of the many activities I participated in, I most enjoyed the tour of the island. It was fun, though I did feel frustrated when the information was explained in both English and German to accommodate two German-speaking travelers. The entire group was made to wait while the information was presented in German.

Half of the trip involved snorkeling, which was a breathtaking experience. I saw something new every time I snorkeled, including penguins, sea lions, turtles, and even sharks. Overall the experience was one of a lifetime. I would recommend the Treasure of the Galapagos to anyone.

Although it is one of the smallest boats seen in Port Isabella, Treasure of Galapagos is large in quality, luxury, and service. Constructed in 2009, the catamaran measures 102 feet long and 36 feet high and has an elegant pearl-white exterior. The Treasure of Galapagos travels around the Galapagos Islands 5 nights a week, offering the 16 passengers on board a breathtaking experience.

Upon boarding, a passenger may first notice the dining room and bar fit for a New York restaurant. The elegant atmosphere is continued throughout the catamaran. Treasure of Galapagos offers three suite choices. The Master Suite features a king-size bed, two private balconies on either end of the room and a private living room. The Matrimonial Suite has a queen-size bed and private balcony, and the Twin Suite is furnished with two twin beds and features a private balcony. All suites are equipped with waterfall showers. The Twin Suite was spacious and comfortable, and the private balcony was peaceful, allowing beautiful and unique views of the islands. The rooms are ideal for couples or individuals, but would not be suitable for families or multiple guests. The suites are ideal for travelers interested in private, reflective space to enjoy island views.

The Treasure of Galapagos offers several different itineraries, depending on the number of days spent aboard. The itineraries offered are all geared towards individuals in good health who are used to an active lifestyle. Activities include hikes that may last up to two hours and snorkeling in waters that require strong swimming ability. An average day includes a morning and afternoon hike with an experienced guide, buffet meals onboard, snorkeling and some free time for relaxation or mingling. After a day spent on the islands, the crew greets returning guests with fresh juices and snacks. All meals are prepared fresh and featured local Ecuadorian cuisine. The meals are delicious and creative, though breakfast standards like eggs and bacon are available every morning for those looking for something simple. Lunches feature a soup starter, made fresh daily and utilizing local ingredients. Though there are many offerings for lunch, the soups are the stand out feature. Dinners are perhaps the best meal offering on the ship. Each night, guests are treated to a formal dining room setting with candles and white linens. While all of the meals on Treasure of Galapagos are good, dinner choices are by far the best. Featuring fresh fish and game and an elegant presentation, dinner is a wonderful time to enjoy excellent food and conversation with other passengers. Evenings on the catamaran are spent at the bar, or enjoying the night air from the top deck jacuzzi, a relaxing and enjoyable end to the day.

During the daily hikes, guests learn about the many different animals native to the Galapagos and are able to explore the beautiful landscape with seasoned guides. Typical morning hikes are two hours long and allow for viewings of iguanas, finches, giant tortoises, and myriad other animals. The hikes are geared toward those who are active, healthy and comfortable hiking many miles over varied terrain. Around mid-day, guests return to the catamaran for lunch and snorkeling. The crew was sure to choose snorkeling areas with plentiful sea life, including turtles, sea lions, sharks and many species of fish. Snorkeling gear is provided free of charge while wet suits are offered for rent for a small fee.

While there are set itineraries, guests are able to contribute ideas for the following day during conversations with guides and crew members. These conversations, held in the afternoon, allow guests time to ask questions and prepare for the next day. The guides onboard Treasure of Galapagos are certified level III naturalists, the most experienced certified guides available.

While it is smaller than many of the vessels touring the Galapagos, Treasure of the Galapagos offers guests a uniquely intimate and comfortable experience. Crew members are exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating and eager to assist guests. The chef offers varied and creative meal plans, with attention to detail and presentation. Tour guides are willing to answer any and all questions and are rated the highest level attainable for a Galapagos guide. The variety of itineraries allows passengers to tailor some elements of their trip to best fit their needs and interests. Accommodations onboard are elegant and well-proportioned offering one-of-a-kind views and comfortable, private space to relax at the end of a long day adventuring. While near perfect, Treasure of Galapagos would not be appropriate for families with younger children, those who are unable to participate in moderate to strenuous physical activity or for those who would prefer anonymity while on board.

With its combination of elegance and comfort, the Treasure of Galapagos is unparalleled in its class. Its concept is well-executed and the crew consistently provides outstanding service. Meals are delicious, innovative and nutritious, and kitchen staff is willing and eager to accommodate guests with special nutritional needs. Treasure of Galapagos is a wonderful vessel with an excellent crew. I would strongly recommend the Treasure of Galapagos to anyone looking for a unique and intimate way to experience the Galapagos Islands.
