Frustration; that is the word to describe how I feel regarding the de-regulation of business. This ludicrous belief that the “market will regulate itself”. Credit cards were a new way to stump the people, and take advantage of those who do not read, or understand the fine print such as teenagers. People live beyond their means and purchase far past their abilities, and it is not surprising that people worked themselves into a hole and under mountains of debt. There is also the issue of the government not protecting society enough and being more tied into the markets and lobbying of those with billions than being concerned with the people. The business should be allowed to operate freely, but there are limits to everything, and it needs to be regulated to avoid abuse; they will not avoid abuse based on their own morality and goodwill or ethics. I have no faith in business as a place where the human factor is equated into anything unless it is Hallmark trying to find a way to profit from the humanity of man. The government should be addressing the protections and there should be a relationship where there is balance brought between business, personal responsibility and the government. The government should be taking into account the needs of all sides, and listening to all constituents to make ethical, moral and constitutional decisions based on more than who can lobby for billions of dollars. This would be the perfect relationship- business offers competitive products, consumers act responsibly and the government is there to regulate and play referee to keep all parties accountable.
