When one envisions one’s life one typically envisions being a lawyer, policeman, firefighter, entrepreneur or doctor from a rather early age; however, I developed a fond interest in science and medicine when I began college. Although I envisioned a future in the field of medicine because I was intrigued by the compassionate demeanor of health care professionals, I have encountered a peculiar set of drawbacks which has slightly hindered my progression toward my ultimate goal. In 2006, I began college and a little thereafter I suffered from a medical condition I was not comfortable with disclosing to anyone at the time. As the medical condition manifested and took its course, I lost focus on my academic studies and went from having straight A’s to failing most of my classes. My college experience was quite overwhelming and exceedingly daunting as I suffered from low self-esteem, had no friends, and skipped most of my classes due to my extreme case of anxiety around other people. The exceptional sense of apprehensiveness lasted for years until I was finally able to overcome it in the summer of 2013. Yet, my experience with Body Dysmorphic Disorder, BDD, was quite intriguing as it exposed me to an entirely different realm in the medical field, which sparked my keen interest in the medical field.

My fondest impression of medicine within the health care sector occurred when I suffered from BDD and required assistance from physicians and specialists. The caring and compassionate nature of my doctors sparked an inner desire toward becoming a physician myself. Pursuing a career in the medical field was a highly ambitious goal especially since I have come from rather unfortunate financial circumstances. Growing up in a single parent household with very little money had its own set of drawbacks. I currently work 60 hours a week to support my family and I still manage to find time to study. I helped in restructuring my brother’s life as he transformed from a failing student in high school to succeed in college. The setbacks I encountered due to my medical issues, low grades as a result of my condition and financial difficulties are a mere representation of the utter resilience, I have to continuously strive to be a part of the medical field. However, in spite of all the adversities I have overcome, I still stand a strong, grounded, confident individual with an insurmountable amount of determination to unremittingly expand my horizons as I journey along a path to a challenging yet rewarding career in the medical field.

My keen desire to pursue a career in the medical field has inspired me to pursue independent research. My independent research has allotted me the opportunity to determine what particular field of medicine I will like to undertake both academically and professionally. Technological advancements have created an entirely new paradigm geared toward delivering quality medical care by aiding physicians and other health care professionals in early detection of certain medical conditions as well as a preventative treatment. I have done several independent research projects pertaining to technology in medicine and the future of rural medicine. As I analyzed the evidence-based practices using meta-analysis and meta-synthesis techniques I have come to the grim conclusion that my area of specialty will be internal medicine as this field is particularly interesting as it bridges two realms one focused on technological advancements and the other focused on the provision of long-term comprehensive care in either a small medical facility or a large hospital. A career-focused on internal medicine will allow me to manage common and complex illnesses and conditions present in adolescents, adults, and elderly individuals. In addition, as an internist, I will be able to assist my patients in diagnosing and treating cancer and other diseases which may potentially affect the blood, heart, joints, and kidneys as well as the digestive system, nervous system, respiratory system, and vascular system. The primary care I will eventually be administering is focused on disease prevention, mental health, substance abuse, treatment options, and wellness. This life-altering approach to medical care is undeniably the most significant aspect of joining the field of medicine. I will not only be responsible for preventive care but will assist patients with determining the right type of treatment options for them in accordance with the treatments which are currently available.

I strive to gain valuable knowledgeable information that will undoubtedly play a quintessential role in my future success in medical school. I am actively seeking new opportunities to expand my horizons and broaden my knowledge of the field of medicine utilizing a variety of resources. As I zealously await the unique opportunity which will allow me to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to not only be an academically successful medical student but to also embark on a high-demand career within the medical field. The field of medicine is definitely a correlation between my yearning to build meaningful doctor-patient relationships in internal medicine while utilizing my science background as well as the knowledge and skills I have been quite fortunate to acquire through independent research.
