1 in 10 Americans suffer depression. Serious depression is a real concern and treatment is often required. Lithium is a common treatment for depression. In most cases it is harmless, but not for expectant mothers. Lithium is known to cause birth defects like malformed heart or blood vessels. Pregnant mothers have to be constantly on the lookout for hazards to their unborn child. Some are less well-known than others. For mothers who suffer from depression, lithium may be a prescribed medication, but it is important to understand the risks that it poses. A teratogen is a substance that causes developmental defects in children while they are in the womb. Lithium is a known teratogen.
