The associate degree in nursing program (ADN) provides a high-quality education based on a liberal arts curriculum preparing leaders in the health care field by focusing on fundamental principles of nursing and the practical application of critical thinking, communication skills, ethical reasoning, information competency, and cultural, social, environmental, and personal awareness and responsibility in the provision of patient care and in a broader context, service within the community.
• Caring is a core tenet of nursing theory; therefore, the concept of caring belongs at the forefront of nursing education.
• Promoting a caring learning environment enables students to learn the value of caring relationships through observation and personal experience.
• Approaching patient care from a holistic perspective, we instill understanding and respect for the importance of compassionate care and advocacy not only for our patients but for their families and other loved ones affected by their illness, as well as concern for the community, which extends to service within the community.
• Students graduate with a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and medical ethics, a perceptive combination of capabilities that prepares them for leadership roles.
Input from my classmates collected from the collaborative assignment gave me the opportunity to consider objectives and philosophical aims from new perspectives. I found the discussion made me consider additional areas of focus, including the proper learning environment/culture and the importance of a strong foundation in evidence-based practice.
