Andrews, D., Richard, D. S., Robinson, P., Celano, P., & Hallaron, J. (2012). The influence of staff nurse perception of leadership style on satisfaction with leadership: A cross-sectional survey of pediatric nurses. International Journal Of Nursing Studies, 49(9).

The study utilized survey data to demonstrate the benefits of changing nursing leadership style in the retention of nurses. The survey demonstrated that if individual nurses are satisfied with their leadership style they will more likely stay in their position. This is beneficial for the pediatric clients they may work with as the nurses would be more experienced. A strength of the article was that it demonstrated ways in which nursing facilities can improve their retention. A weakness of the article is that it did not focus on the benefits of nursing retention on the patients they work with. Effective leadership would determine for me whether or not I would be satisfied in my position.

Fleming, A., Collins, S., Moore, L., Sheehan, K., Harris, B., Wall, S., & ... Macogay, M. (2011). EB80: Growing a Garden of Leadership. Critical Care Nurse, 31(2), e28.

The article analyzed a program which was designed to build leadership within a nursing facility horizontally rather than vertically. The article demonstrated that this model taught leadership skills to all nurses within the unit. A strength of the article was demonstrating a model which effectively spreads leadership skills and develops the burgeoning group of professional nursing leaders. Although the program was developed in a pediatric unit the article did not specifically address the impact of the program on the pediatric patients. The article was interesting to me as I would eventually like to become a nurse leader and the article presented ways in which this could be done.

Jih-Yuan, C. (2010). Morale and Role Strain of Undergraduate Nursing Students in a Pediatric Clinical Setting. Journal Of Nursing Research (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins), 18(2), 144-15

This study analyzed the effects of the pediatric nursing setting on morale and role strain on nursing students. The article did a good job of demonstrating the emotional impact of the nursing program on nursing students. The article did not discuss leadership directly which was a weakness. However, this article is related to leadership as leaders need to be aware of the strain students go through as they experience for pediatric nursing. As a nursing student I anticipate experiencing morale and role strain which was why the article was relevant to me.
