This study explores the effect of caffeine on cognitive functions, specifically on memory recall. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the diuretic caffeine has effects on attention and alertness, the hypothesis being that, by blocking nerve receptors said to produce sedative effects, caffeine will improve alertness, which will, in turn, improve memory consolidation and capacity. The subjects of this study are students from a private school located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, who are enrolled in an Introductory Psychology course. The students range from ages 18 to 24. The caffeine used in the study will be given in the form of coffee. The students' memories will be tested with and without caffeine, and the results will be compared to determine the effects of caffeine on memory capacity. Given the hypothesis, the caffeine should have a positive effect on memory because of the caffeine’s chemical properties associated with attention and alertness.
