Counseling Psychology Program Admission Cover Letter

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to you today in hopes of being accepted into the Master of Arts program in Counseling at (Insert University). I believe this application will prove that I have the skills and background necessary to positively contribute not only to the learning environment at this university, but also to the future clients and coworkers with whom I will interact.

Along with a BA in psychology, I also have a background that is rife in experience with respect to working with others. First, I served in the military during (insert years). The leadership skills and tenacity I developed during this time are traits that I have and will continue to carry with me through the rest of my career endeavors. In fact, these traits helped me serve as the captain of the Oxnard College basketball team from 2015-17. Along with the leadership I have displayed on the basketball court, I also take pride in my role as a staff member of the YMCA.

In fact, a certain experience during my time at the YMCA helped inspire me to pursue a career in psychology. At the YMCA, I was responsible for overseeing activities which involved children. I became particularly close with one child, who confided in me the (she or he) was being abused by (his or her) father. After disclosing this information with me, I was able to help get (him or her) the help she needed. The relief I saw on this child's face when she knew that her problem had been lifted made me want to continue help lifting these burdens from others.

This desire to help others may also stem from my own experiences with psychological trauma. After experiencing an episode of sexual abuse in the military, I took tremendous solace in the help of my MFTs and psychologists. The lessons they taught me about my mind and emotions have ignited a strong desire to share similar information with others.

I sincerely hope that you give me the chance to study counseling at your university, so I can continue my journey on this path.
