Topic: Donating to the Positively Kids Foundation

General Purpose: The purpose of my speech is to persuade you to donate to the Positively Kids Foundation

Specific Purpose: To ensure the audience that donating to the Positively Kids Foundation will not only be highly beneficial for the children involved in the organization but will boost their self-esteem for helping foster children in medical need who cannot afford the healthcare without help.

Thesis: The benefits of donating to a charity for children far outweigh other charities because children cannot provide for themselves. The fact that these kids were already abandoned and are in foster care should re-enforce that they need outside help to survive. None of the medical reasons are the children’s fault, as it is either a hereditary illness or was something they contracted. The organization provides care for children up to 18 years old that are in the child welfare system, in foster care, and have no access to healthcare. “Their medical dependency could be a result of an accident, abuse, neglect, illness or a congenital disorder” (Jourdan, 2011)

Introduction

I. Attention Getter: To begin my speech I would like you all to think about how good it feels to see a child smile. Now I would like you to think about an unhealthy child and how if you could see them smile through their pain, or even possibly make it all better, how exceedingly good that would make you feel. Some of you may have children of your own, nieces, nephews, younger brothers or sisters, cousins, no matter what you all know at least one child in your life and that means you know how rewarding it is to see a healthy child playing and laughing.

II. Thesis: With that being said, the purpose of my speech is to persuade you to donate to the Positively Kids Foundation not only to benefit the children, but it will help you feel better as a person as well. Morally and ethically donating to a place that encourages healthcare for children without medical insurance makes the most sense for donating to any charity.

III. Preview: The main points I will be going over today are ethically and morally, why it’s right to donate to this charity. I will also be discussing how your donation will also be a contribution to bettering society and promoting safety and healthcare for children. Lastly, I will talk to you about tax breaks and the promotion of the healthcare system in general.

Transition: To begin, I will be covering how ethically and morally donating to Positively Kids will benefit not only the children but you as well.

Body

I. Ethically speaking, the right thing to do is to donate to people in need. On top of need comes the morally correct decision to help a child who cannot help themselves and is in an unfortunate situation by no fault of their own.

A. “If we care about what our money is doing, we should look for the most effective charities” (Ord, 2012)

1. This ensures that your money goes to an extremely beneficial charity and one that starts at home rather than in another country.

2. Donating to the right charity, especially the charity that you feel is right can invoke a sense of positive energy toward yourself for helping another person in need.

B. Ethics is the code we live and work by to ensure to ourselves that we are good people

1. If we continue to show children that we can do the right thing by donating to a charity for children who can't help themselves, ultimately we ensure that the children of our future grow up to have the same moral and ethical standards that we are displaying by donating.

2. Because we donate to children who are in foster care, we encourage the children to continue to hold out hope for a happy, healthy future.

C. We are teaching the children about the importance of giving and of healthcare

1. The most important thing in the world is education and by giving to charity we are educating the children on the importance of affordable health insurance.

2. You will put a smile on the face of every child you help. These kids have been placed in foster homes because of neglect or abandonment and it would serve you well to encourage them to believe that love is really alive and so is hope.

Transition: Complimenting the ethical and moral argument is the fact that you’re contributing to society to better it as a whole.

II. By donating to a charity, it’s safe to say that you’re helping to support the economy, especially for people who cannot afford to help themselves

A. It’s not that it would be stimulation for the economy, but by adding into the pool, you’re helping to make it bigger for others and contributing in a profound way that allows people less fortunate to feel equality.

1. By allowing access to healthcare, equally, everyone is on the same playing field when it comes to getting quality health insurance

2. You’re promoting healthcare and the fact that people should have it because it is dangerous not to. Without health insurance, people run the risk of falling into debt and to bring children so young into a world of debt, simply isn’t fair. “Bankruptcies resulting from unpaid medical bills will affect nearly 2 million people this year – making health care the No. 1 cause of such filings, and outpacing bankruptcies due to credit-card bills or unpaid mortgages” (Mangan, 2013)

B. Tax Breaks are available

1. You are allowed to get a tax break on the money you spend.

2. All donations and gifts are eligible for a tax deduction to the fullest extent of the law. (CASA, 2013)

3. A tax deduction is available for you in the same year you made the donation, the deductions are limited but very high

Transition: Promoting the healthcare system and its importance

III. Information on healthcare is limited to children

A. Educating the youth, the future of our world

1. Children with these sorts of backgrounds deserve to go into a world where they are aware of what is surrounding them when it comes to health insurance and the unfortunate predicament the U.S. is in today may not ensure that they get the quality information they need to know about it

2. By providing health care, children will grow up knowing they should have coverage and they will do what they need to, to ensure that they have it once they know how important it is from all the years it has been provided for them through charity. With such a small percentage of children not having health insurance, surely it couldn’t be that hard to provide the funds for it. “8% of children had no health insurance coverage, and 5% of children had no usual place of health care.” (Bloom, Cohen, Freeman, 2010)

Transition: In addition to providing health insurance to children, you’re promoting the need for it for the future

Conclusion

I. Summary: All in all giving to The Positively Kids Foundation is a sure way to make you feel good about where your money is going. You will be helping neglected children by giving them a right that was unfairly taken away from them when they were abandoned. By giving a charitable donation to this foundation, you are ensuring that you will feel good about yourself, you are ensuring the health of young children and providing them with an education about a subject that they may not realize is important yet. You are helping to settle the economy and you are promoting healthcare in all the right ways.

II. Closure: The right to healthcare is a major issue in the world right now and while people are struggling everywhere to get the right plan and an affordable one, your donation could ease the future of hundreds of children everywhere and provide them with a safety that they deserve.
