I always felt that I must have done something right in my life to warrant a friend like Andrea.
How do you sum up the life of an incredible person in a couple of paragraphs?
Her death has left a hole in my life that I cannot imagine will ever be filled. Being able to tell you all what an amazing person she was, is a privilege because I had the blessing of experiencing her love and friendship first-hand. With life and death, death ends a life, not a relationship (Albom).
How we met really set the stage for our relationship throughout our lives.
Andrea and I met in Chemistry class during our early college years. As lab partners, we had the opportunity to work together on chemistry assignments all throughout the semester while enjoying our growing friendship. Andrea was a gifted intellectual and found her passion for chemistry early in her life, setting her career goal of pursuing work in the pharmaceutical industry. She was one of those people whose natural gifts toward science coupled with a kind heart set the tone for saving the world with her contribution to great research. Chemistry, unfortunately for me, was not my forte and proved to be quite a struggle. Regardless of how often I needed help, Andrea never complained and was always there for me to answer my questions and get me through. I will always be grateful to her for helping me to get through such a difficult class. I can still remember very clearly the big day of our Chemistry Lab Test on the Vitamin C Lab, which concluded most of our semester work. Properly carrying it out was critical for our final grade, and we were both so nervous that we were literally shaking, trying not to overcook our broccoli resulting in not being able to properly test the lost Vitamin C. Our friendship and established working relationship which we had developed throughout that semester allowed us both to successfully carry out our experiment, and I remember the wonderful feeling of knowing that I was able to help someone who was such a big help to me.
Even after we went our separate ways, we remained an important part of each other’s lives and families.
After finishing our two-year general studies, our paths took off in different directions but we managed to keep in touch meeting up once a year every summer. Andrea’s perseverance and hard work helped her to pursue a career in the pharmacy profession—a career for which she was naturally gifted and excelled. She was living her dream: helping and advising people, researching new drugs, and saving the world little by little every day. Andrea was a passionate pharmacist, taking part in many research projects related to developing new drugs to cure diseases such as cancer or HIV. As an active member of Findacure, she brought hope and healing to so many people. She was also an active member of the Cancer Retreat Program at St. Claire Hospital in her community. Her drive and big heart always made sure she had room in her life to help just a little more.
She continued to strive to help others with her gift for research, but she never put those goals over the love she had for her family.
Andrea, not only excelled as a pharmacist and researcher, but she was also a loving wife to Tom and a great mother to his two children, Emily and Jacob. Although she was busy with her career, she always made certain to spend time with her family and show them how much she loved them. She was an excellent cook, and my family and I loved coming down to visit in the summer. Her amazing Romanian stuffed cabbage recipe, which she had learned to prepare as a child from her grandmother, was always a great success.
Andrea gave to the world her love for others and desire to help those she didn’t know. She also gave me the biggest gift she could—the knowledge that she was my friend and would always be by my side when she was needed.
Andrea did it all. She was a great mom, a loving wife, and a dedicated researcher. But she was more than that. She had a big heart with so much love and showed that through her volunteer work in the many charity programs and research projects to develop new drugs related to heart disease. For me, though, she was a wonderful friend ready to help out whenever she was needed. When my husband got sick and was rushed to the hospital with heart failure, Andrea jumped on a plane and quickly came to us making certain that we have everything we needed. She has always been there for me, and I feel blessed for the privilege of being able to call her my friend
She was a person who excelled as a mom, wife, researcher, and a friend by deeply touching the lives of many. The world is definitely a better place because of Andrea Sz, and she will be greatly missed. The song is ended, but the memory lingers on (Berlin). I miss you terribly, Andrea. Rest in peace.
