One thing that I learned in this course that has almost nothing to do with theater is the importance of using the proper vocabulary to discuss certain topics, such as differentiating the usage of a musical from a symphony. The extensive study we undertook in this class to constantly ensure that the schools of thought and theatrical techniques being discussed were properly defined truly underscored the seriousness of this issue. The paramount importance of using the correct vocabulary was also highlighted by the class’s intensive study of a variety of “isms,” or various artistic and philosophical schools of thought that were occasionally only tangentially connected to the theater.

My newfound knowledge of these various terms allowed me to discuss both the subjects in this class and a variety of other issues unrelated to this field with a new degree of confidence and sophistication. Furthermore, I came to realize that one cannot discuss any complex subject to a meaningful degree absent the vocabulary that allows expression of one’s ideas. These revelations have dramatically affected my study habits and my general approach towards accumulating knowledge and approaching high-level subjects such as those in the STEM field.

Overall, one thing this course taught me that was only slightly related to the theater is the importance of a well-rounded technical vocabulary. Without this foundation, greater in-depth knowledge of a subject is almost impossible, and for this revelation, I have only this course to thank. It is my sincere hope that I will continue to master vocabulary specific to my areas of interest as I continue in life.
